One day old newborn was dumped in garbage bin at Kani Bazaar Mohalla, Hazaribag

Hazaribagh, 2009 May 10 / Telegraph: A newborn was found in a garbage bin at Kani Bazaar Mohalla here today.

The one-day-old boy was wrapped in a jute bag and dumped in the vat close to an open drain.

Meena Devi, a resident of the area, spotted the baby around 10am. Hearing the wailing of a baby, Meena came out of her house. As she went near the vat, she saw an infant lying there in a jute bag. She raised an alarm and local residents rushed to the spot.

They rushed the newborn to Sadar hospital for treatment where the doctors referred him to Ranchi as he needed advanced treatment after lying wrapped in the jute bag for several hours.

The doctors at Sadar hospital said that the baby was a day old and at present was out of danger but needed to be monitored. They further said that the baby was dumped in the garbage vat at 3 or 4am.

Police officers said the baby miraculously survived despite being kept in the dump for more than six hours. A search for his parents was on, they added.

As news of the recovery of the newborn spread, many couples rushed to the hospital to adopt him. The police officers handed over the baby to one Prakash Agarwal, a businessman and resident of Kani Bazaar Mohalla.

Officer in charge of Sadar police station Kumar Keshav said: "The baby has been handed over to Prakash Agarwal, who has two daughters, and can raise the boy well. He will fulfil all the formalities once he comes back to Hazaribagh after the treatment of the baby is over in Ranchi."
